Learn to Play the Dizi

Learning the Dizi  -  1. applying the dimo  |  2. how to hold the dizi  |  3. review dizi finger chart  |  4. play

There are 4 basic steps to learn how to play the Dizi.

#1.     Applying the dimo Applying the dimo
Before playing, you got to put on a dimo (membrane). The dimo goes over the mokong hole (membrane hole). Other flutes around the world do not have a mokong hole, which is one of the unique parts about the chinese flute - you can choose the sound that it makes by changing the dimo.

#2.     How to hold the dizi How to hold the dizi
Holding the chinese flute becomes natural after practicing a few times. This is not something you want to learn wrong. Three fingers from your left hand, and three fingers from your right hand, and thats all it takes.

#3.     Review dizi finger chart Review dizi finger chart
Dizi finger charts are one of the most important steps to playing the chinese flute. Different dizis have different keys, so find the key of your dizi and then review the finger chart. And make sure to have a finger chart nearby for reference when you first start playing music. Here, we assume you already know how to read music.

#4.     Play Play!
Its all about practice. First figure out how to make a sound with an easy note, such as either all fingers pressed or no fingers pressed. Then go from there. You will need to practice blowing different notes, because each note has a different way of blowing. Also, because no two dizi are the same, you will need to learn how to blow your own dizi.
